Great Basin Naturalists Fall Break Exploration Camp 2020 Canceled
9/1/2020, 1:46 pm
Hello parents, guardians, and campers,
This is an update regarding the status of the Great Basin Naturalists, Fall Break Exploration Camp, scheduled from October 5th to the 9th.
Due to the challenges associated with safely operating camp programming, as well as a continued urge for citizens to avoid unnecessary public outings and practice social distancing, we have decided to cancel this year’s Fall Break Exploration Camp.
While camp may be canceled, we are still offering Youth and Teen Camp-in-a-Boxes! Packed with over 30 hours of lessons, crafts, and fun, this program allows your kiddos to have the same Great Basin Naturalists experience they know and love, from the safety and comfort of home. Scholarship funds are still available so if you are one of the many families who have been financially impacted by COVID-19, your children may be eligible! See the attached application and camp promos for more information.
We greatly appreciate your understanding during these unpredictable times. Please know that we are incredibly saddened to have to cancel camp. It is not a decision we made lightly, but ultimately, this decision was made to ensure the health, well-being, and safety of our campers, staff, and community.
We greatly appreciate your business and look forward to coming back together for our traditional camp programs in 2021. Thank you and stay safe!
Best,
Laura Azzarello

Great Basin Naturalists Summer Camp 2020 Canceled
5/21/2020, 3:33 pm
Dear Great Basin Naturalists Families,
For 10 years now, you have entrusted us with the important job of keeping your child safe at summer camp. Our commitment to your child’s safety now requires that, with a very heavy heart, we must cancel our summer camp sessions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After reviewing all options, this decision was made for the health and well-being of our campers, staff, and greater community.
With respect to refunds for the season, there are a variety of options for those parents who have either partially or fully paid for their camper’s session. Those options are as follows:
Please email lazzarello@gbinstitute.org by Monday, June 1st to indicate your desired option with your refund. If your child received a full or partial scholarship to attend camp this summer, funding can be transferred to a 2021 camp session of your choosing.
We realize you may be feeling many emotions right now. Your campers are likely upset about the possibility of summer without camp, while parents may be feeling stressed out at this prospect. We understand your role as a parent has been tested beyond anything imagined these past few months. Rest assured, we are currently working on alternative summer camp programming which reduces risk but also provides outdoor education that campers can do from the safety of home. We will be sure to notify you as soon as the details of this program have been finalized.
We want to thank you for your continued love and support over the past weeks. Without you and your smart, silly, adventurous, kind, spirited children, we would not be able to do what we do. We look forward to coming back together in 2021, stronger than ever.
Best,
Laura Azzarello

Galena Creek Visitor Center Status Update - Closed until May 15th
5/1/2020, 12:52 pm
This is a status update regarding the operation of the Galena Creek Visitor Center as of 5/1/2020.
At the Galena Creek Visitor Center, there is nothing more important to us than the health and safety of our community, volunteers, and staff. Due to concerns about the COVID-19 virus, the Visitor Center has temporarily closed with a tentative reopening date of May 15th. This decision is based on the state's decision to extend the stay-at-home order through mid-May with a possible extension beyond that as well. We will continue to follow these directives as they are announced.
Community and education programs in the month of May have been canceled in order to prevent gatherings and practice social distancing. We make these efforts in order to reduce the spread of infection in Nevada and protect our state's vulnerable populations.
While the Center may be closed, the Galena Creek Regional Park trails remain open daily from 8 am to 7 pm. Please keep in mind that all park bathrooms are closed so be sure to, 'go before you go,' and practice social distancing on the trails.
We look forward to the day when our doors can reopen and we can welcome you all back to the Center. Until then, stay safe, stay healthy, and stay home - for Nevada.
We are wishing you all the best.

Galena Creek Visitor Center Status Update - Closed until May 1st
4/2/2020, 11:01 am
This is a status update regarding the operation of the Galena Creek Visitor Center as of 4/1/2020.
Today, Nevada Governor, Steve Sisolak, declared an extension of the state’s emergency responses related to the COVID-19 virus. In order to reduce the spread of infection and protect our state’s vulnerable populations, Sisolak has urged the continuation of social distancing measures through the end of April.
In compliance with this decision, the Galena Creek Visitor Center partners (Great Basin Institute, USDA Forest Service, and Washoe County) have decided to extend the temporary closure of the Visitor Center through the month of April with a tentative reopening date of Friday, May 1st. All Visitor Center programs scheduled within the month of April have also been canceled. The Galena Creek Regional Park remains open on a daily basis from 8 am to 7 pm.
As always, we greatly appreciate your understanding during these uncertain times. We will continue to make every effort to protect our community and flatten the curve.
Stay safe, stay healthy, stay home – for Nevada. We are wishing you all the best.

This is an update regarding the status of the Great Basin Naturalists, Spring Break Exploration Camp – weeks 1 & 2, scheduled for next week (3/16-20) and the following week (3/23-27).
Due to the unprecedented and rapidly changing nature of this pandemic, as well as a growing urge for citizens to avoid unnecessary public outings, we have decided to cancel both weeks of Spring Break Exploration Camp.

Coronavirus Announcement
3/14/2020
GBI – GCVC
*Information based on recommendations by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
At the Galena Creek Visitor Center, our number 1 priority is always the health and well-being of our community. With the recent outbreak of Coronavirus both internationally and domestically, we want to address how this may affect our programming.
As of now, no education or community events have been canceled. We continue to stay current on all CDC and local protocols, and will follow guidelines for management according to local and global recommendations.
Considering that we remain operational, the Galena Creek Visitor Center has adopted a strict, daily cleaning schedule to disinfect surfaces and materials that are regularly touched within the facility according to recommendation from the CDC (tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks). We will continue to diligently and thoroughly clean until the virus is no longer a threat. We also ask our patrons and park visitors to consider their role in reducing the spread of disease and risk of infection at this time.
Things you can do to prevent illness and the spread of Coronavirus:
- Clean your hands often
- Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
- Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose as much as possible, especially with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick
- Put distance between yourself and other people if you or others in your household and close-community are sick
- Stay home if you are sick (except to get medical care)
- Wear a facemask if you are sick. If you are not sick, you do not need to wear a facemask, unless you are a caregiver to those who are sick
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily
We will continue to keep you updated on our policies and procedures as the situation evolves. We appreciate your commitment to helping us keeping our community safe for all.
