Nature Education for Every Child
“He who has seen the intimate beauty of nature must become either a poet or a naturalist, and if his eyes are good enough and his powers of observation sharp enough, he may well become both.” ~ Konrad Lorenz
Research indicates that nature-based education has the potential to bring about a multitude of benefits for people of all ages, cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. It has been demonstrated that children who have access to learning in the natural environment have:
· Longer attention spans;
· More creativity;
· Higher levels of self-confidence;
· Greater academic success;
· Improved cognitive development, self-discipline and social interactions;
· Greater imaginative and creative expression and language skills.
At a time when educational agencies are faced with budget cuts and meeting minimum operations, creating a critical need for local non-school based organizations to step in and fulfill this need. Great Basin Naturalists Studies at the Galena Creek Visitor Center strives to help people of all ages experience and enjoy our unique environment through the convergence of natural and cultural history, science, humanities and the arts.
